BS EN206-1:2000 was published in 2000 and then introduced in December 2003 in the United Kingdom and across the European Union. The EN206 and BS 8500 standards directly replaced BS 5328, the previous British Standard for concrete.

BS EN206-1:2000 covers Cement and concrete technology, Concrete Performance, Performance testing, Conformity, Production, Aggregates, Construction materials, Curing (concrete), Quality control, Inspection, Verification, Concrete mixes, Composition, Delivery, Compressive strength, Grades (quality).

BS 8500 - Concrete, is the complementary British Standard to BS EN 206-1 and was first published in March 2002. It provides substantial UK provisions not covered in BS EN 206-1. Both the EN206-1 and BS 8500 documents replaced BS 5328, Concrete, in December 2003. BS 8500 was updated in November 2006.

The BS 8500 standard is in two parts:

  • Method of specifying and guidance for the specifier
  • Specification for constituent materials and concrete

Part 1 is for the specifier i.e. the person or body establishing the specification for the fresh and hardened concrete or who passes the specification to the producer, in other words the purchaser of the ready-mixed concrete.

Part 2 is for the producer and contains specification requirements for the producer.

BS 8500 is significantly different from BS 5328 in both approach and specific requirements. It has changed the way concrete specifications are written. In essence under BS 8500, concrete may be specified as either proprietary, standardised prescribed, prescribed, designated or designed concrete.

The International Standardization Organization

A comprehensive catalogue of international standards, their nomenclature, and their reference details can be found at the main ISO website. Standardization is becoming increasingly important in the computing arena, and indeed generally. Having access to an extensive reference source such as this will hopefully be useful to growing numbers of visitors.
